Smyth's arrival highlights a furious 48 hours

Feb 28, 2007

The Islanders landed one of the biggest fish at the deadline, literally. At 3 p.m., up against the deadline, the Isles landed Ryan Smyth for prospects Ryan O'Marra and Robert Nilsson and the Islanders' first-round pick in 2007.

Smyth, already a 31-goal scorer, will join Richard Zednik, who the Isles acquired yesterday from the Washington Capitals for a second round pick.

Oiler GM Kevin Lowe has taken a lot of initial criticism for not letting other GM’s know that Smyth was available, as GM’s were surprised that Smyth was traded; so credit Islander GM Garth Snow with being “in the know,” and landing Smyth.

CUTTING SOME FAT

The Rangers made two subtle moves. The first move sent the outspoken Aaron Ward to Boston for Paul Mara. Mara will add much needed size to the backline.

In another move, the Rangers sent Pascal Dupuis to Atlanta for prospect Alex Bourret and a third-round pick. Dupuis has not impressed since he was acquired last week, so credit Glen Sather for understanding that Dupuis was not a fit in New York.

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, WHY FIX IT?

Aside from a minor deal, unloading the undependable David Hale to Calgary for a third-round pick, the Devils chose to keep the roster as is, and why not?

Although it would have been difficult to execute a trade, being up against the cap, the Devils have been the best team in the East during the second half. Considering that the Sabres are both injured and faltering, the Devils could be the favorites in the East.
